Librarian Dorcas Protexter, shown at the computers, which are available for
public use.

For those who love to read, the Emil M Larson
Library features many fine books that have been donated through the years.
The library is located in the Ullyot Building, which is located on North
Commercial St. The library offers a nice selection of books, videos,
research tools and has two computers for public use. The library was
founded on July 1, 1921 by the newly organized Clark Woman's Federated Club.
The library was its first major civic project. It was first housed in the
old McDonald building at 101 N Commercial St and Mrs. H.L. Ratliff was the first
librarian. In 1923 the library was moved to the second floor of the old
Warner Abstract building. A drive was made for books and so many became
available that storage space had to be rented. The City Council decided to
take over the library in May of 1928. A library board of trustees
was formed and in May of 1929 the library was moved into City Hall. One of
the greatest benefactors of the library is Emil M. Larson of Houston, TX, who
sent a box of books every month for many years. In honor of the
benefactor, a native son of Clark, who was blinded during World War II, the
board of trustees renamed the library the Emil M. Larson Public Library at a
special open house on May 30, 1973.
